Lidar cameras, cameras and 3D mapping sensors are powerful instruments for robot vacuums that track their surroundings. They provide elite obstacle-avoidance. Some prefer a basic vacuum that is cheap.

In our tests, this vacuum built an editable floor map in both small and large rooms, with good accuracy. It also picked up spills well and worked efficiently in "No-Go" zones we set.

1. Neato Botvac D4

If you're looking for the convenience of a robotic vacuum without making many sacrifices in terms of performance, then this Neato is an excellent choice. The D4 comes with excellent navigation and mapping features and smart home integration and an easy-to-use application and all at a price point that won't blow your budget.

To set up this bot, you'll need to plug it into its base and connect it to your home Wi-Fi network. Once that's done, the Neato application will guide you through the initial configuration (linking to Wi-Fi and giving the D4, etc.). When the D4 is fully charged it's time to start a cleaning cycle.

Once the D4 is up and running the app lets you set up a schedule automatically or manually at any point. You can also utilize your voice to control it via Google Home or Amazon Alexa. If you own an Apple Watch you can start cleaning sessions by tapping the wrist.

In our lab tests the model performed well on carpeted and hard flooring, picking up 91.3% of debris combined in serpentine pathways. It's not as efficient in removing dirt from corners and edges as the more expensive models. The D4's side sensors keep it around 1.5 inches away from walls. It doesn't have the side-sweeping brush on all, if not the cheapest robotic cleaners. Furthermore, its raised turret means it can't be placed under furniture with low clearance. It does support virtual No-Go Lines. So you can draw red lines on your floor plan and tell the D4 to stay away from that area. The battery life of 75 minutes is about average, too. This is an affordable price to pay for the convenience of this model.

2. IRobot Roomba 980

The Roomba from iRobot is the flagship robot of the company, offering premium performance and connected features. The 980 is priced at $899/PS899 however it's usually cheaper if you shop around online (John Lewis or Amazon US are both good places to start).

The 980 features the most advanced cleaning system among any of our top picks, with the HEPA filter that can trap tiny dust particles and allergens to ensure better air quality in your home. It also works with a variety of flooring surfaces, including hardwoods and tiles.

One of the most notable features of the 980 is its top-mounted camera and SLAM sensor that allow it to move more effectively than other Roombas, even in tight spaces such as hallways and corners. iRobot refers to this technology as iAdapt 2.0 and it uses images taken by the camera in order to create an internal map. This helps the 980 to keep track of the exact location, meaning that it doesn't spend time cleaning areas which have already been covered.

iRobot has also added some new smart features, including a feature that allows you designate a specific area of your house as not accessible to the 980. This feature wasn't the most sophisticated or largest we tried, but it does the job and is a welcome addition. The 980 can be controlled with voice commands made using Alexa or Google Assistant. It can take several minutes to complete an order.

The Roomba can return to its base station automatically when it is finished cleaning, ensuring it is always ready for the next adventure. This feature is only available on the 980, and it's a nice addition that makes the otherwise fairly expensive robot more convenient to own.

3. iRobot 985

iRobot Roomba 985 is a product designed to help you get your floors looking cleaner and more beautiful, thanks to its powerful cleaning system, intelligent navigation, and integration with other iRobot products. Its patented dirt-detection system alerts you when areas need extra attention. Smart sensors keep it away from dangers and stairs. It can also automatically recharge and continue cleaning until the job is completed. Its intelligent mapping technology and vSLAM allows it to map the entire floor of your home. It keeps track of what rooms are left to clean and the exact location of it.

Its low-profile allows it to get under carpets, furniture, and other objects where dust and pet hair are often hidden. Unlike many robot vacuums, it is also able to clean dirt from corners and along edges. You can schedule cleaning times by using the iRobot App or with your voice, using Alexa and Google Assistant.

The iRobot Roomba 985 is powered by lithium-ion batteries that are of the best quality. They charge faster and last for longer than other brands. The battery comes with a 12-month guarantee and is guaranteed to work under normal operating conditions. The high impact ABS and Polycarbonate plastic construction gives it durability. Gold contacts that are resistant welding and durable circuitry offer long-term reliability.

4. iRobot Roomba 990

The latest iRobot robot offers the best obstacle avoidance of any Roomba we've tested thanks to its front-facing camera and laser sensor. This makes it able to avoid pet feces and wires much better than other robotic vacuums we've reviewed, like the Roborock S6MaxV, EcovacsN8Pro, and others.

It's also iRobot's strongest vacuum, capable of taking on dirt with more granular debris and more pet hair unlike other mid-range models such as the Roomba 960. This is due to the cleaner's wider counter-rotating brushes and a stronger motor with more suction power.

The Roomba 995 is iRobot’s least expensive vacuum, and comes with recharge and resume. However, it does not have the auto-empty feature that the I6+ or I7 offer. It lacks the iAdapt navigation 2.0 and carpet the camera used by the I7 to track objects and avoid obstructions. It can't access features like in-app containment or save maps.

Another issue is that the iRobot 995 doesn't include mopping capabilities. This isn't a problem if you're only looking for a quality vacuum, but it's an important disadvantage for anyone looking to buy a hybrid robot.

The other iRobot that has automatic-empty is the Combo J7+, which can be used to vacuum and mop. It has the same navigation capabilities as the I6+ and I7 but it doesn't come with iAdapt 2.0 and a camera. It doesn't save any maps and doesn't offer the same features for in-app containment as the I7 or S9. The Combo J7+ does, however it has improved automation via iRobot Genius and can learn your habits of cleaning to automate cleaning schedules. It also has a bigger dust bin than I6+ or I7. It can hold 2.5 liters, which is enough for 60 days.

5. IRobot Roomba 960

A less expensive alternative to the 980, the 960 offers similar performance in a smaller package. It is great for carpeted and bare floors, picking up food crumbs and tracked-in dirt. It's also excellent at navigating and avoiding obstacles. It also does a great job of cleaning dirt embedded.

This robot utilizes iAdapt navigation 2.0 to track its position. This allows it to navigate the space efficiently and avoid getting trapped. It can see the floor as well as its obstacles and objects by using SLAM and a top-mounted camera. It can even be placed under couches and tables because of its low profile. It's also able to return to its dock to recharge whenever it's needed.

The 960's navigation, despite lacking certain advanced features like maps-saving and selective cleaning of rooms is superior to the majority of robots. It also has a bigger dust bin than the 690.

The iRobot Home app for iOS or Android lets you control the 960. It comes with a range of automation options which include the ability to create cleaning preferences, schedule, trigger spot cleanings and carpet monitor the battery status. You can also track the location of the vacuum and get notifications when the dirt container is full. The 960 is also compatible with voice commands via Alexa and carpet Google Assistant. The iRobot Roomba 960 makes a great choice for most homes. It's well-built, has lower recurring costs, a larger dirt container, and costs more quickly than the RoboVac 11 But if you're looking for a low-cost alternative that can perform the same on carpets and floors, consider the Neato Botvac D7.
