Like the previous generation of WH headphones, the XM5s excel at noise cancellation. They're among the top-performing headphones to block out the continuous drones that can be heard in train and underground carriages. The XM5s are great at their job of separating listeners from traffic noises of busy streets and airports as well.

The sound quality is also very good. The XM5s do not have as many details in the low-frequency range as the XM4, however they do possess more clarity and openness. Ear cups can be flipped and rotated to accommodate different head shapes. The spring-loaded hinges offer a firm, but not too much clamping force that makes sure the ear cups remain in place throughout listening sessions.

A small button at the the right earcup allows you to switch between noise cancelling modes. There's also a pushable, Jog-dial-like button, akin to the digital crown on the Apple Watch, that you can turn to control volume and press once, twice or thrice for playback controls. Pressing and holding the button will activate Siri. The buttons are easy to use and are well-placed, but I would have liked to see the power button that could shut off the headphones when not in use. The headphones are put into standby when they are removed from your ears or when placed in their case. They will return to life when you put them on your head.

Another cool feature is spatial audio, which makes use of the accelerometers and gyroscopes in the AirPods Max and your iPhone or iPad to determine the direction you're going, and then repositions the sound to create the illusion that they're coming from these locations. This creates an immersive theater experience for films and videos made in 5.1, 7.1 or Dolby Atmos. The only drawback is that spatial audio requires an iOS device to be used and it won't allow you to enjoy it with other devices.

The AirPods Max is a decent pair, but I would feel a little ripped off for spending $549 at an Apple Store knowing that the second-generation model would be better after a year. The AirPods Pro have more advanced features and improved battery performance, making it hard to justify the extra expense for most people.
